Clever tip test: Does spaghetti work as a candle lighter?

Reader Rebecca Maupin of Matthews made the following tip. Try it yourself and post to the blog and let us know if it works. One  person will win a $5 Bojangles card.

If you need a long match but don't have one, grab a piece of dry spaghetti from your pantry. Strike a match, and hold the flame under the spaghetti until it ignites.   Once lit, extinguish the match and use the lit spaghetti to light the candle.  This tip  works for fireplaces & charcoal grills too.

Doesn't this basically ruin a perfectly good match AND a stick of spaghetti?

Maybe they should just make matches out of semolina and save a few trees.

I wonder how many firefighters would vote this down due to spaghetti being very fragile and could break?

Yeah boy. You're clever alright!

I've used that trick for years. It works perfectly.

...filling a bottle full of gasoline, sticking a rag out the end and lighting the rag will also work...

Doesn't mean it's a smart thing to do.

I would think that someone using "this trick for years" would be smart enough to ensure they have fireplace matches on hand and only have to light spaghetting once, maybe twice in their lifetime.

Ya know, seeing as if you have to have a match to light the spaghetti to begin with.

I learned that spaghetti would hold a flame like a match when I accidentally dropped a dry noodle on the eye on my glass cooktop. Almost burned the house down. It works... but I would not recommend it.
